2020 Mosconi Cup betting tips
When it comes to the sport of pool, there is no bigger tournament than the Mosconi Cup and the great news is that we’re going to get a 2020 competition due to the fact that Alexandra Palace will stage the event between 1-4 December 2020.
Team Europe and Team USA will compete over four days to determine the overall winner, with the Americans bidding to win the Mosconi Cup for the third successive year, although the latest betting odds imply that the Europeans have a strong chance of victory.
Europe Strong Betting Favourites to Win 2020 Mosconi Cup
The European team might have narrowly been defeated in the 2018 and 2019 renewals of the Mosconi Cup, although they are expected to be a stronger force in 2020 and the bookies are no bigger than 1/2 about the European side who will want revenge for the past two defeats.
Alex Lely is the new team captain for Europe and the Dutchman will be confident of steering his side to victory, although the absence of spectators means that home advantage won’t necessarily count for a great deal at Ally Pally.
Karl Boyes is a valuable pair of hands as the European vice captain and has previous experience of skippering the Mosconi Cup team in 2008 and 2009, with Fedor Gorst among the new recruits to the team and he’s the current world champion.
Can Team USA Make it a Hat-Trick of Mosconi Cup Titles?
Some punters might find it strange that America are such a big betting price to win the 2020 Mosconi Cup considering that they have won the past two renewals, triumphing at Alexandra Palace in 2018 before another success in Las Vegas in 2019 and they’ll want to keep that going after such a long period of European dominance.
Skyler Woodward was the MVP on both of those successful occasions and the 27-year-old is likely to be critical to his team’s success in this clash, while captain Jeremy Jones is not only a former US Open champion but also a five-time Mosconi Cup winner and knows what it takes to get over the line.
The COVID-19 regulations might make things a little trickier for the Americans this time around, although they’ll arrive in the UK with plenty of time to spare in order to prepare for the big competition. Joey Gray is the right-hand man who is tasked with bringing home the bacon.
The History of the Mosconi Cup
The Mosconi Cup first started in 1994 due to the fact that matchroom wanted to create something similar to golf’s Ryder Cup and it made sense to have some kind of trans-Atlantic pool clash considering the sport’s popularity on both sides of the water.
The first Mosconi Cup saw Team USA win 16-12 against Team Europe and, despite the latter winning the 1995 tournament, it was the Americans who dominated the early clashes, with nine out of ten competitions between 1996-2005 won by Team USA.
In more recent years, it’s been the European side who have dominated more and they strung together eight successive victories between 2010-2017 which saw them dominate until the past couple of years.
