2022 Europa League Betting
Group ABodø/Glimt are top of the section and the Norwegian side have claimed a win and a draw to be sitting pretty in Group A. Manager Kjetil Knutsen has been linked with a number of high-profile managerial positions although a draw away to PSV was followed by a 2-1 win over Zurich, with a double header against Arsenal on the horizon.
The Gunners have only played one game where they won 2-1 in Switzerland and it would be a big surprise if Arsenal didn’t reach the knockout stage. Meanwhile, PSV will feel confident that they can get the upper hand over Zurich over two matches and it could be a group that goes right to the wire.
Group BRennes and Fenerbahce are in the box seat to emerge from Europa League Group B, with the two teams playing out a 2-2 draw at Roazhon Park where the French side took a 2-0 lead only for their opponents to haul themselves back in the game. The outfits had previously won their opening clashes.
Rennes won away to AEK Larnaca thanks to an injury-time goal and Fenerbahce were able to topple a Dynamo Kiev side who are pointless after two matches played. It could be the case that the top two are able to kick clear and they’re likely to be battling it out for top spot in Group B.
Group CReal Betis have been full of goals in the Europa League this season, with the Spanish side making the most of their foray into Europe. A 2-0 win away to HJK was followed by an entertaining 3-2 victory against Ludogorets Razgrad, with Betis now going up against Roma over two clashes which should be a sterner test of their credentials.
Jose Mourinho’s side won the Europa Conference League last season and they were dealt a surprise defeat away in Bulgaria before a straightforward win over HJK. They are betting favourites to overcome Real Betis in their next game and it’s likely to be the Spanish and Italian sides who go through.
Group DBraga are making it look easy in Europa League Group D and the Portuguese side will now feel confident that they can finish top of the section. A 2-0 win away to Malmo FF was followed by a 1-0 victory against Bundesliga table-toppers Union Berlin, with the defence looking super tight in Europe.
Union Saint-Gilloise are an unfancied team from Belgium who also have six points, with a surprise victory away to Union Berlin being followed by a 3-2 win over Malmo. If they can get something from two games against Braga, it sets the team up nicely although much depends on whether Union Berlin now take this competition seriously.
Group EReal Sociedad had a fine 2021-22 season in La Liga and they are now translating that form into Europe, with the Spanish outfit winning 1-0 away to in-form Manchester United before a 2-1 victory over Omonia. The fact that they now have a home and away clash against Sheriff Tiraspol sets them up nicely.
The Red Devils will be optimistic that they can also reach the knockout stage of the competition, with a 2-0 win in Romania setting them back on course after getting turned over at home to Sociedad. United will feel confident that they can land a maximum haul against Omonia in two upcoming games.
Group FWe’ve got an interesting situation in Europa League Group F where all teams have three points from two rounds of fixtures played. There have been a lot of goals scored and we’ve seen nineteen racked up in four matches, with Feyenoord topping the table and they have lost 4-2 at Lazio before a 6-0 thrashing of Sturm Graz.
The Austrian side had previously beaten Midtjylland before the Danish side somehow contrived to engineer a 5-1 victory over Lazio, with Feyenoord and the Rome outfit likely to emerge into the knockout stage although much depends on how seriously they are taking the competition in relation to domestic affairs.
Group GSC Freiburg have taken control of the Europa League section after two games played. The German side are hoping to follow in the footsteps of Eintracht Frankfurt and win the trophy, with a 2-1 win over Qarabag being followed by a 3-0 victory in Greece when facing Olympiacos and they will now meet Nantes over two games.
Nantes beat their Greek opponents in an opener before losing away to Qarabag and a 3-0 defeat means that we can’t rule out the Azerbaijan side from further progress, with their home advantage possibly playing a part. They travel to Olympiacos in their next game before entertaining the side from Greece.
Group HThe Hungarian national side are progressing nicely right now in the Nations League and it seems as though Ferencvaros are doing the same in the Europa League. They enjoyed a 3-2 win over Trabzonspor before a more impressive 1-0 victory away to Monaco and they are now in pole position to reach the knockout stage of the competition.
Red Star Belgrade sit bottom of Group H and they were beaten at home to Monaco before another defeat away at Trabzonspor, with the Turkish side now travelling to France and the outcome of their two matches against Ligue 1 opponents will have a big bearing on which team joins Ferencvaros.
How Does the Europa League Work?
The Europa League usually starts in July and before the majority of domestic football campaigns have kicked off. There are several qualifying rounds before we get to the group stage and there are generally twelve groups of four teams, with each group having a seeding structure which means that the best teams are kept apart at this phase of the competition.
Once the group stage of the Europa League is complete, we then have twelve winners of the group and twelve runners-up and they go through to the knockout stage of the competition. In addition to these twenty-four teams, there are also eight teams from the Champions League that drop into this competition and they are the sides who finished third in their respective groups.
Now the thirty-two teams are drawn into a knockout stage and there are sixteen ties played on a home-and-away basis. We then have a last sixteen and last eight and last four stage which is played on a similar basis, with the away goals rule in force which means teams sometimes go through despite being level on aggregate.
Finally, we have the Europa League final where the two teams left standing compete at a neutral venue and the winner not only lands the Europa League trophy but they also qualify for the Champions League the following season. Sometimes they might have already qualified for this competition due to their standing in their domestic league.
Which Teams Have Won Recent Europa League Competitions?
There have been a real mixture of different teams winning the Europa League for one obvious reason. The leading teams in Europe generally compete in the Champions League which means that the teams at the business end of each Europa League tend to be third-placed sides from the Champions League groups along with the teams who are roughly fifth or sixth best in their respective domestic table.
Chelsea were the winners of the 2018-19 Europa League, beating Arsenal in an all-England final and the west London club were also successful in 2012-13 when beating Benfica at the Amsterdam Arena. However, the Blues have also been involved in the Champions League in recent years and managed to win this competition too.
Atletico Madrid are another Champions League regular who occasionally dip into the Europa League and they triumphed in the 2017-18 season when beating Marseille 3-0, while Diego Simeone’s side also overcame Athletic Bilbao by a similar scoreline in the 2012-13 final.
Manchester United were successful under Jose Mourinho in 2016-17, although the more remarkable achievement came in the preceding three years when Unai Emery steered Sevilla to three successive victories in the Europa League and that was before the winners of the competition automatically qualified for the Champions League.
