Toronto only joined the Atlantic in 2004 as part of a reshuffle that saw the Heat, Orlando and Washington depart to the Southeast. In 11 completed seasons in this division they have taken the division title three times, in 2007 and in both 2014 and 2015.
They made Delon Wright their first round draft pick in the summer and the young Californian will hope to have a real impact and help his side to a hat-trick of titles. They top the outright winner betting for the Atlantic Division at short odds of just 3/10 with Bet365 and having made some solid summer additions they are worthy favourites to once more dominate.
Last season they finished with a franchise-record 49 wins that left them fourth in the Eastern Conference, with Louis Williams capping a fine season by winning the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award. They have every chance of improving on that and in a weak division it’s hard to oppose them in the outright market, even at such a heavily odds-on price. The fact they lost 4-0 in the first round of the 2015 playoffs says a lot but in truth the Atlantic is theirs for the taking.
Their main challenge would appear to come from the Boston Celtics, but the fact they are way out at odds of 9/2 with Sky Bet shows just how easy the odds makers think Wright and co will have things this season in the Atlantic Division.
Next up in the divisional outright winner betting come Brooklyn at 25/1 with Bet365, whilst not even a Philadelphia fan with obsessive loyalty, a dislike of money and no brain would take a pop on the 76ers at odds greater than 100/1 with a range of betting sites.
If we disregard these latter two sides out of hand and say that Derek Fisher’s Knicks are not realistic division winners that leaves us with the Celtics as the only serious challenge to Toronto in the outright betting.
Boston finished down in seventh in the Eastern with a losing 40-42 record despite a strong finish to the season which, for some, will form the basis of any optimism about their chances this time around. They tasted outright success in this division for five years in a row between 2008 and 2012 but with the end of the Big Three era they aren’t the same team and the rebuilding is some way off completion in our eyes.
Offering up betting tips at 3/10 won’t make anyone rich and may not be the boldest move but if you’re betting on the outright winner of the NBA’s Atlantic Division there is no alternative – it’s Toronto all the way.
